Why Practise With A Metronome?

Many guitarists can play fast.

Far fewer can play accurately, consistently, and in perfect time.

A metronome helps musicians:

  • Develop internal timing
  • Improve rhythm accuracy
  • Clean up sloppy transitions
  • Build speed gradually
  • Strengthen alternate picking consistency
  • Tighten rhythm guitar playing
  • Improve sync between hands
  • Master odd time signatures
  • Practise complex rhythmic subdivisions
  • Stay locked in during recording and live performance

Understanding Subdivisions

Quarter Notes

The main pulse of the beat.

Eighth Notes

Twice as fast as quarter notes:
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

Triplets

Three evenly spaced notes per beat:
1-trip-let 2-trip-let

Sixteenth Notes

Four evenly spaced notes per beat:
1-e-&-a

Sextuplets

Six notes per beat, often used in fast lead guitar and fusion phrasing.

Guitar Practice Tips

Start slower than you think you need to.

Perfect repetition builds clean muscle memory. Sloppy fast practice builds sloppy fast playing.

A useful technique:

  • Play perfectly at a slow BPM
  • Increase by 5 BPM
  • Repeat until accuracy drops
  • Reduce slightly and stabilise there

The metronome never lies 😄
